Marble Paint Pouring
Paint pouring is something I have wanted to do for a while. I remember seeing a video where the paint is poured into a kitchen strainer and the coolest artwork resulted.
When DecoArt gave us the option to try marbling, it quickly became a matter of selecting what I would paint from Oriental Trading. Wooden snowflakes came to mind but I fell in love with the 2-piece 3D snowflakes and my vision started to come together.
The two wooden pieces interlock and include 12 snowflakes sets. There are 3 different snowflakes, so 4 of each.
I started by watching some videos of paint pouring and reading several blog posts. Gail, at Purple Hues and Me, did a great post with step by step photos. In her post she mentions she thinks she should have had a higher pouring medium to paint ratio, so I used a lot less paint than medium.
Now I had my idea and was ready to start pouring paint. Initially, I planned on using the blue, white and glittery silver DecoArt sent me. As I was mixing the paint into the pouring medium, I realized I wanted more of an icy look.
So, I added white to all my colors and a bit of green to my blue. Then I mixed the glittery blue, green and silver paint with white paint. Right away I realized the glitter would sink to the bottom so I needed to stir it a lot just before using.
Using some scraps of a plastic container, I made little stands for the snowflakes and set up a few in an aluminum pan. The pan enabled me to keep paint from running all over the place.
Pouring a bit of each paint into my strainer, I was ready for instant masterpieces…
… that didn’t happen…
My little stands quickly fell over and the paint couldn’t really flow over the snowflakes. I ended up pouring the paint into the strainer repeatedly over each snowflake. Then flipping the snowflakes over and pushing them around in the paint. Trying to get both sides as covered as possible and still have a marble effect.
Once covered, I put the snowflakes over the rim of plastic cups to dry.
3D Snowflake Ornaments
I want to give paint pouring another try, most likely on canvas. My biggest problem is I don’t like to waste materials! It was hard for me to pour lots of paint and I never like to mix up more paint than I think I will use. Hopefully, I will be able to get over this problem.
The good news is my 3D snowflakes still turned out awesome!
The colors may not scream Christmas, but they do have an icy look, exactly what I had in mind
After the paint dried, I used a nail file to sand the paint off in the interlocking slots. Otherwise, the two pieces of the snowflakes didn’t slide together well.
Ok, they were actually really hard to get together. So maybe next time I’ll figure out a way to block off the slots or assemble them before pouring paint.
But I still love the way they turned out! What do you think?
