Welcome to another Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop! A fun challenge to motivate the participants not just to pin things but to make them happen! This month I decided to do a crocheted poinsettia. While working on my Crocheted Farmhouse Winter Wreath I decided it needed something more. Not finding what I wanted in my stash or in the store, I decided to turn to Pinterest and make my own poinsettia.
Inspiration
I took inspiration from several patterns, mostly found via The Spruce Crafts and DIY Crafts. Nothing was exactly what I wanted. Dozens of petals and blocking aren’t my idea of a quick project. Appropriate sometimes, but not for something I was going to be hanging on my front door, only protected by a screen door.
I found many beautiful ideas but decided to come up with my own way of making a crocheted poinsettia.
Crocheted Poinsettia
While I do enjoy pops of red, I was looking for a white poinsettia. Using worsted weight yarn and an appropriate hook, begin by chaining 3 stitches. Single crochet in the middle stitch. Chain 12. Turn and single crochet in the 3rd chain from the hook. Single crochet the rest of the stitches back to the center (10 stitches). Single chain in the middle again and repeat 2 more times to form the base of 3 petals.
Now it’s time to give the petals more shape. Start with the first petal and repeat these stitches around all 3 petals. Slip stitch along the center to the beginning of a petal. Single chain in the first petal stitch. Half-double crochet in the next 2 stitches. Double crochet in each of the following 5 stitches. Half-double crochet in the next stitch and single crochet at the end of the petal. Chain 2 and begin working down the opposite side of the petal. Single crochet in the first stitch. Half-double crochet in the next stitch. Double crochet in each of the next 5 stitches. Half-double crochet in the next 2 stitches and complete with a single crochet. Slip stitch your way to the next petal and repeat.
Make 3 petal sets. Yes, you could block the petals to flatten them out and make the points of the petals more prominent.
Stack the petals and shift them so the flower fills out. Sew them together using a bit of yarn. For the stamen, sew some beads or bells to the center of the crocheted poinsettia.

Oh wow, these look beautiful! Poinsettia are such a Christmasy flower but I never seen to be able to keep them alive so this seems like a good alternative- even I couldn’t kill off a crochet Poinsettia!!! #Triumphanttales
