The weather is starting to get cooler. I’m trying to get myself excited for fall with some decorating. The return of the monthly Craft Room Destash challenge is the perfect excuse for making some new fall decor. Despite my constant craft room disaster, I easily found everything I needed to make a succulent pumpkin.

Succulent Pumpkin

Have you seen these expensive beauties in the store? I’m drawn to the simplicity of succulents “planted” in a pumpkin. Since I have a tendency to stock up on faux succulents when I find them on sale or in the dollar store, I knew I could make my own for a lot less.

If I didn’t already have the succulents on hand, the entire project would have cost me $5! The succulent picks I used were only $1 each. A few weeks ago I grabbed a few foam pumpkins from Dollar Tree. I used several of them last year and knew I would find a use for them again. Since they sell out fast, I’m glad I grabbed some when I had the chance.

Paint

Chalk paint is easily found in my house. Super handy when painting almost anything. I sat down with pumpkins of various sizes and colors, painting them either white or teal. But mostly white.

Chalk paint dries quick so it didn’t take long to put on 2-3 coats. In fact, it might have been the longest part of the whole project!

Next, I decided to give it a little dimension with some brown antiquing wax. Painting a stripe down each “rib” of the pumpkin and wiping away the excess.

But it was a little too much. A light coat of the white chalk paint easily toned it down. I also popped off the bright green stem, no longer needing my “painting handle!”

Succulents

My faux succulents all had wire stems on them for arrangements. Some were a little too long and others I wanted to separate. A pair of wire cutters took care of this.

Since the pumpkin is foam, arranging the succulents in the pumpkin was easy.

Easy Fall Decor

Quick and easy! This succulent pumpkin will work with my fall decor from now until I’m ready to break out the Christmas decorations.

This was a great stash buster since I already had everything on hand. If I did have to purchase the supplies, the pumpkin and 4 succulents I used were only $1 each.

I always have Waverly Chalk Paint on hand. Foam makeup wedges make for easy application and clean up!

Craft Room Destash Challenge

I can’t wait to see what everyone else made from the supplies they have on hand. Be sure to check out all the hostesses!

Every month a group of bloggers are challenged by C’mon Get Crafty to create a new craft or project from their own stash of goodies! Everyone is allowed a $10 allowance for necessities to complete their project (i.e. paint brushes, glue, etc), but the bulk of it must be created from their own stash of goodies.

Let’s meet this month’s bloggers!!
