Hi, I’m Emily!
Welcome, I’m so happy you’re here! Creativity is a main focus in my life. I have always loved creating beautiful things and working with my hands. My grandma taught me to crochet when I was just five years old. My mother was an art teacher, so I was encouraged to create in a wide variety of mediums. From paint to clay, to woodworking, and beyond. As an adult, I have continued to incorporate creativity into my everyday life and encourage my children to find their creative paths.
You’ll notice that I jump around from medium to medium. Some days you can find me drawing on my iPad, other days, I might be tearing down a wall in my house to redesign an entire space.
Background
Growing up I moved every few years between Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. But home was always Linwood Park in Vermillion, Ohio. I started designing and making jewelry out of my mom’s scrap watercolor paper, recycling wrapping paper, paint, and layers of Mod Podge. Later I moved on to working with clay and even learning to silversmith and stone setting.
It was this love of jewelry design, and my fear of selling, that led me to getting my business degree from Ohio University in Marketing and Small Business Entrepreneurship. At OU I was active in my sorority, Sigma Kappa, and my business fraternity, Phi Gamma Nu. It was at a Sigma Kappa and Lambda Chi Alpha function that I met my husband.
When my children were young I began Domestic Deadline as a way of keeping track of the projects I wanted to do as well as sharing what the kids and I were creating with family and friends.
Alongside this, I sold a variety of creations at local craft shows and on Etsy.
For more than 20 years now, I’ve lived in New Jersey with my husband and three kids. However, now two of those kids are attending Ohio University!
About HarperNCo
While blogging at Domestic Deadline, I continued to use the name Harper in my Etsy shop and when selling my creations. Harper is my given middle name, honoring my great aunt and uncle. I passed this name down to my middle child because it was meaningful to me.
Initially, I thought of branding as Harper and company, because I always had 3 kids keeping me company as I created. But, I soon realized “and co” sounded like the initials of my children N… C… O. Since I always enjoyed creating with and for them, it was important I include them in my business.
HarperNCo became my official company name. My middle daughter, who shares my love of graphic design, created my logo
