The monthly Craft Room De-Stash Challenge I’ve been participating in for a while now has been great for my craft room! In fact, I’ve tried to stick to the challenge rules all the time when possible. I see working from the supplies I have on hand like working a puzzle. Rock what you’ve got! Since I enjoy crocheting, much of my stash is compromised of yarn… lots and lots of yarn. Recently, I was asked if I could make “baby lovies.” Low and behold, I had purchased the materials a few months ago….

Crocheted Baby Lovies

I try really hard not to purchase more craft materials unless I can’t finish a project without something. Like, getting 3/4th of the way into a sweater only to realize I don’t have enough in my stash to do two sleeves! Then, I go hunting for what I need and try really, really, REALLY hard to only bring home what I went for.

It doesn’t always work.

I didn’t find the specific yarn I was looking for. But, I did see these really cute knit hat kits on sale, plus I had a coupon. Since I still had quite a few projects in the works, they sat in the bag they came home in for quite a while. And were forgotten about.

Until I was asked if I could make “baby lovies.” Basically, an animal head with a small blanket attached. My first plan was to crochet the head of an amigurumi, like the monkey I made for my son last year.

While selecting the yarn to use, I found the “lil toppers” kits. This turned into a super easy project. One that was great for taking on the go… I even crocheted most of these on a train!

How to Make Baby Lovies

If you can crochet a granny square, you can make this! Using the yarn from the kit, I crocheted a simple granny square until I ran out of yarn.

Once finished, the head is applied per the kit instructions. Included in the kit is a foam circle with two holes punched. The head has two ribbons hanging from it. I put the ribbons through the center of the granny square and threaded one ribbon through each hole in the foam circle. Then tied it up!

These little guys are so cute! Look at these faces!

I’m going to be gifting a few of them very soon. The eyes are all stitched on, so no worries of small parts. I’ll be including a note so mom and dad know the head can be removed for washing since I expect the blanket part to need to be washed more often than the head (kit instructions said spot clean the head).

  1. I love the idea of using a kit for something other than what it's intended for! Sometimes I'll buy kits just for the material, not for the project. These turned out really cute!
