Our master bath is on the needs to be renovated list, just after my son’s bathroom. His comes first because I don’t want to have to use his in its current condition while we work on ours! We did slap a coat of paint on the walls, but nothing more than that. The plastic countertop is stained, the faux gold finish on the faucet is pealing, and the lights light up the top of the medicine cabinet more than the actual room. With cabinet doors falling off and broken drawers, it just hasn’t been worth the time to band-aid it when we are going to rip it out. So, my drawers for this part of the event were almost non-existent.

Before

It’s not to say I wouldn’t have liked the bathroom to look better than this…

I just didn’t want to invest too much energy or expense into this space yet. My time is spent dreaming and planning how I’ll renovate it!

But, solving my lack of drawers space in my craft room last week gave me a free solution.

I took everything off the counter, out of the medicine cabinet and the one fully functional drawer. At first, I was going to start organizing in the room, but I soon realized I would lose steam quickly due to the lack of space to work.

So, I put everything in a laundry basket and plopped down on my living room floor. While watching a little HGTV, I got to work.

Solutions

My basement had become a container graveyard. The bins, baskets and drawer organizers all came from our old house. But, not everything worked out to be used the same way in the new house. I’ve been storing them in my basement until I know for sure if I’m done with them. Some things I’ve passed on to others, but I recently decided I need to reclaim this space. If I need something similar again later, I’ll buy it then. Besides, there are so many options for plastic drawers, I’ll probably want something new!

Luckily for me, one of those buried treasures still existed. Several plastic 3 drawer units worked great in our old linen closet but not our new one. A few were utilized by IronFish for sorting smaller tools, but I managed to find one unused. I also found unused drawer organizers.

First thing I did was get rid of anything that was trash, recyclable or hadn’t been used for a long time. I filled an entire kitchen trash bag! It’s kinda embarrassing, but I figure I can’t be the only one in the world who has let a mess get that bad!

Anything in the pile that has a designated home, was put where it belongs

Then I started separating what was left.

After

When I do spend the time to really organize things, I like to keep things together that will be used together and in the place where they will be used.

For me, that means it doesn’t make sense to keep all of my lip gloss together and all of my eyeshadows together.

I don’t use all of them every day. So, I separated by my daily use and occasional use.

Ok, truth be told, I haven’t been doing much of makeup on a daily basis, because the counter had gotten so bad it took too long to find what I needed!

I’m really hoping this helps, I used to be all about my makeup!

The middle drawer is my hair stuff. I have other products I use occasionally, but I rock the messy bun most days so this drawer is also daily use.

As for the top drawer, I’m still not sure about it. I went ahead and put my morning and evening Rodan and Fields skincare products in there. Previously they had been in the medicine cabinet. This was probably the only part of the bathroom that was working out for me.

But the medicine cabinet is also tidied up so if I decide to go back, I can.

As for the cabinet drawer, I don’t use my macro exfoliator as often as I used to, but I still want the option so I stored it and the related items in the back. The front is the cleaning products for my rolling. I need to get back to using that on a regular basis but now I finally fell I can since I know where everything is.

I’m still not 100% sure this is the best layout for me, but I’ll try it and see what happens! Plus, I know it will help me to decide how I want the vanity and storage laid out when we renovate. And it looks so much nicer now.
