It’s Day 11, I can’t believe it’s the second to last day of the 12 Days of Christmas Blog Hop. Today’s theme is front porch decor. In the past, I haven’t done a ton with our front porch. At Halloween time this year, we didn’t even have a front porch! When we bought our house, we knew the front steps and walkway needed to be replaced. Just a few weeks ago we had the whole thing torn out and replaced. Now there is a solid concrete base and a gray herringbone brick overlay. Plus, we had the whole porch enlarged. I finally had a place to put a giant Believe sign I’ve been wanting to make for a few years now.

Believe Sign

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to do for this theme. I haven’t really had much of a front porch in the past. While I’ve seen some wonderful ideas in Pinterest land, I only knew I wanted a giant Believe sign.

So, yesterday I determined I didn’t have an appropriate piece of wood to make the sign on hand and went to buy a six-foot 1×12 board.

With a pencil, I wrote “Believe” on the board, using a ruler to make sure I kept the size of the letters consistent. I already had red chalk paint on hand, so I just started painting.

Yes, right in the middle of my kitchen. I was originally going to stain the board, but I didn’t want to do that in my kitchen and it was too cold outside for staining.

Since it’s not pressure treated wood for the outdoors, I’m sure the weather will do the aging for me! If not, I can always stain it and touch up the paint another time.

With the porch enlarged, I was able to put the little tree on the right side of the door. I went to buy something and remembered we had a little pre-lit tree with a broken base. When O-Man was a toddler, he wouldn’t leave the tree alone. So, instead of our big tree, we used this little one, upon a high shelf, out of his reach. We used it in another room last year, but I noticed the base was broken when I put it away.

When I bought the board, I grabbed a plastic planter too. A few bricks in the bottom and the tree works perfectly in it. It lights up with the rest of the outdoor lights.

It’s all pretty simple. I’m sure next year I’ll do more, now that we have a nice porch to actually decorate!

  1. A great statement piece! It works really well on the porch with that little tree -- you did an amazing job drawing the letters free-hand! If I had done that . . . well, let's just say it would have been eye-catching. And not in a good way lol.
  2. I love your hand lettered Believe sign! I keep meaning to make some sort of sign to lean on my porch -- I even have a big piece of wood. I just need to make the painting part happen. #HomeMattersParty
  3. I love your sign. Could you do a tutorial on painting the letters on the board for us non-artist bloggers. Oh, please join my Sunday's Best linkup. We would love to have you share your posts there.
    1. I certainly could try! I have another sign to paint soon, so I'll do a better job of capturing the process, sometimes I just wing it!
