As my kids have gotten older, I’ve begun to move more towards rustic farmhouse Christmas decor and away from bright and child-friendly. Enjoying a more mellow and soothing color scheme for various holidays seems to have brought my holiday stress level down. The past few weeks have been busy and while I’ve been working on tons of Christmas projects and gift shopping, I haven’t finished the decorating. My goal is to finish it up this week. But I tend to start with the mantel, so today I’ll be sharing how I updated the mantel and fireplace wall moving towards the rustic farmhouse Christmas decor I love.

It’s Day 7 and we are sharing Holiday Decor Ideas!
Mantel
Our old house didn’t have a mantel. The fireplace and mantel have become one of my favorite spaces to decorate for holidays and seasons. A few years ago I made a Barn Wood Stocking Hanger and it’s become the centerpiece of the mantel every year. I love how it works with the whitewashed brick wall.
Plus, stockings just pop against the fireplace. My neighbor offers these beautiful hand knit stockings. She has so many choices and they can be personalized!
Last year I wrapped the pictures that normally hang on either side of the mantel. Part of why I did that is because I was trying to decide if I wanted to keep the pictures the way they were or change them, post-holiday. While I decided I was ready for a change, they went back to unwrapped and the way they were after the holidays.
Chalkboard Trees
This year I still didn’t know what I wanted but decided to move them more towards the farmhouse style I love. Removable contact paper made this a quick and easy project. Wood plank contact paper carefully applied over the original picture gave me a base.
I matched up the pattern so the planks were long enough. Since I love chalkboards, a layer of chalkboard contact paper was added next.
And I sketched Christmas trees with chalk to give them seasonal cheer. I want to wrap twine or possibly ribbon over the bottom portion of the wood planks, but my craft room is a disaster and I can’t find what I want right now!
I’m still unpacking decorations and will use the display space on the cabinets, but I’m pleased with the progress.
Christmas Pillow Covers
Seasonal pillow covers have been on my to-do list since we moved into the house. When buying our couch, I never planned on leaving the throw pillows that match the couch, well, matching! Alas, we are approaching our 4th Christmas in this house and I have not made new pillow covers.
Ok, I’m about 3 quarters of the way through crocheting one, but since I’m designing it as I go, it’s taking a bit longer than I wanted.
So, I broke down and snagged these darling pillow covers. For the most part, the colors go well with my decor and they are super soft.
I grabbed the set of 4 when they were on sale. Now I don’t feel as stressed about making my own pillow covers. I still will, but I will be able to use these in the meantime.
Two of them don’t say Christmas, so they probably will stay on all winter. There are a few other sets in more traditional Christmas colors.
Jane is another great place to find Christmas pillow covers, I might need to snag one or two of these at only $5.99 each!
Rustic Farmhouse Christmas Decor
I may not have completely moved towards my vision for my holiday decor, but I am enjoying the more mellow look as it’s evolving.
One of my new favorite Christmas decor pieces is a sign I just recently made at a friend’s house. Not only was it fun to have a girls night out, but I now have a cute, rustic sign reminding my family that Christmas isn’t always about the gifts!
