When I first joined the Monthly Craft Room De-Stash Challenge group, I knew I had a lot of supplies in my stash to use. Ever since I’ve made it a personal goal to try to use supplies I have on hand for as many of my projects as possible. Yarn is something I have a large abundance of. Lately, I’ve been making blankets for gifts. Wanting to make a chunky knit blanket, but not having any chunky yarn on hand, I decided to get a little creative and make my own.
DIY Chunky Yarn
Starting with 6 strands of yarn, I crochet a chain using a Q crochet hook.
This part is easy and totally mindless if you can crochet a chain. Really therapeutic and great for tv watching. When one skein of yarn ran out, join the new yarn using the Magic Knot.
And just keep crocheting.
And crocheting…
The only yarn I purchased for this was one skein of Red Heart Super Saver in Macaw. I don’t know how long my chain is, but I used almost 2 skeins of the macaw yarn, so probably at let 800 yards of yarn was crocheted times six. The other colors were a gray, aqua, 3 strands of white, all from my stash.
Once I have a huge pile of my new chunky yarn, it is time to start knitting!
DIY Chunky Knit Blanket
My knitting knowledge is limited. When I want to knit, I often have to turn to online instructions to get myself going again. Initially, I planned on arm knitting the blanket, but once I got started, I realized it wasn’t coming out in how I envisioned.
But, the largest knitting needles I could find were size 50. So, I resorted to 1 1/2″ PVC pipe and cast on 24 stitches. From there I knit the basic knit stitch working back and forth.
Continue knitting as many rows as possible.
I love how the crocheted yarn makes for a nice chunky knit fabric. It’s squishy and stretchy.
Even with the crocheting and knitting, the overall blanket didn’t take as long as some big blankets I’ve made in the past.
The recipient was thrilled! Now I just have to make blankets for her 4 brothers!
Monthly Craft Destash Challenge
Every month a group of bloggers are challenged by C’mon Get Crafty to create a new craft or project from their own stash of goodies! Everyone is allowed a $10 allowance for necessities to complete their project (i.e. paintbrushes, glue, etc), but the bulk of it must be created from their own stash of goodies.
Let’s meet this month’s bloggers!!
