Welcome to the May Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by My Pinterventures. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen! This month I decided to make a crochet pillow for my living room using the Dahlia pattern from My Crochetory. But, as usual, I had to make mine a little different!

Crochet Dahlia Pillow

Making pillows for our living room has been on my to-do list for almost 3 years now. Once the couch and color scheme was selected, my mind got to work. My hands, however, were quite busy with several other things. Major renovations have left little time for the details.

While I have a stack of beautiful fabrics selected to make pillows, getting to the sewing machine isn’t always easy. I’m constantly trying to get my craft room organized, but it tends to be a catch-all room.

Even with all kinds of projects going on, I almost always have a crochet project with me. Once the kids are in bed, IronFish and I will often watch a few shows we’ve DVR’d and I will crochet. With a nice cup of tea, it’s my way to unwind from the day.

When I saw this beautiful pattern for the Dahlia Pillow on My Crochetory, I knew the pattern would add a beautiful texture to the throw pillows I’ve been envisioning for so long.

Plus, I’m always game for learning a new technique and the Intarsia crochet style was something I’d never even heard of! Me being impatient, I didn’t take Sylwia’s advice and practice first… so my first few rows have some errors. But, I’m not perfect, so I’m ok with it!

And, the pillow wouldn’t be perfect for my living room if I hadn’t changed the colors! Although, I do have lampshades that perfectly coordinate with the original pillow colors!

Pillow Cover

Aside from changing the colors, I tried to follow the pattern as exact as I could… For the front. I want to be able to change pillows around with the season as well as wash them.

Since the majority of my projects lately have been stash busting, I had just enough of the yarn I selected to make the front panel.

To make the back, I had to return to my yarn stash and found another white yarn. The color is fine, the texture isn’t as soft, but it’s for the back of the pillow, so that didn’t bother me. I decided to go with an envelope style since the yarn wasn’t an exact match.

This technique can be used for any crochet pillow. Make 2 panels.

Chain the length of the pillow.

Single or half-double crochet rows until the panel is 3/4 the height of the pillow front

Place the pillow front face up. Lay both panels over top, lining one panel with the top of the pillow front and the second panel with the bottom of the pillow front. The panels will overlap.

Using a yarn needle stitch around the perimeter of the pillow. You could also crochet the perimeter.

Your pillow is now inside out. Reach through the two back panels and flip it right side out. Insert your pillow form. (I’m still learning photography, I needed some shadows or the white back disappeared!).

  1. This is so pretty! Love that it is an envelope pillow cover too! I hate when you have to stuff a crocheted pillow directly. It also makes it so much harder to clean. Your color choices are beautiful and it looks very happy in it's new home on your couch.
