I love participating in blog challenges. And I was so excited to join a thrift store challenge this month… I knew exactly what I wanted to make… until I struck out at my local thrift store! I was so disappointed. Time to come up with plan B and check out the Facebook yard sale pages. Still unable to find something to work with my idea, I stumbled upon a huge stash of yarn for only $10! Plan B ended up with crochet farmhouse dish towel holders.
Crochet Farmhouse Dish Towel Holder
I have been looking for a small side table to tile for several months now. After several trips to my local thrift store, I still haven’t found the right piece. Eventually, I will find the right piece.
In the meantime, I wasn’t about to pass up a huge stash of yarn for only $10! Ever since I made my farmhouse dishcloths for myself, I’ve been making them for friends and customers. One cone of cotton yarn is more than $10. The stash I purchased had 3 full cones, at least a dozen small skeins of colorful cotton yarn and a handful of other random yarns.
It was a great find!
And, it was plan B for this challenge!
All I needed was a package of shower curtain rings.
For less than $1.00, I picked up a box of plastic shower curtain rings and started crocheting around them. Pushing the single crochet stitches tightly together to completely cover the ring. About 45 stitches, ending with covering the clasp (which I snapped closed).
Slip stitch over 2-3 stitches so the clasp is slightly offset. Chain one and turn. Crochet 8 single crochet stitches as the base for the tab. The “tab” is what can be buttoned over the oven, dishwasher, or fridge handle. The towel is held by the ring.
Next, crochet 18 rows of the seed stitch. If you aren’t familiar with the seed stitch, it’s one of my favorites and super easy. It’s simply one single crochet (SC) stitch followed by one double crochet (DC) stitch and repeated. Working in even numbers (in our case, 8), when the work is turned the pattern continues on the next row. So a SC stitch is made over a DC and a DC is made over a SC.
Row 19, SC the first two stitches together, SC then chain 2. Skip 2 stitches and SC in the next stitch, this makes a buttonhole. Finally, SC the last two stitches together.
For the final row, SC in all 6 stitches.
In other words:
Row 1: *SC, DC (repeat from *) 8 stitches. Turn
Row 2-18: repeat Row 1 (8)
Row 19: SC 2tog, SC, Ch 2, skip 2 ST, SC, SC 2tog (6). Turn
Row 20: SC in all 6 stitches (6). Tie off and weave in ends.
Find a great button and sew it near the base of the tab.
Ok, you caught me, I didn’t sew the button on… I have a ton of buttons but none of them were speaking to me for these crochet dish towel holders. Not sure if I’ll keep digging or head back to the store for more buttons!
It’s perfect for holding a towel and keeping it from falling on the floor!
I made some dishcloths to match the dish towel holders. There is still tons of yarn left, I barely made a dent in this stash!
