It’s time once again for the #CraftRoomDestash challenge! I love participating in this monthly event because it forces me to use the materials I have on hand. With spring and Easter just around the corner, I wanted to make something fun. We’ve never done lots of gifts for Easter, usually something small and some candy. But we do enjoy a big Easter egg hunt when we visit my parents. I’m not sure what made me decide I needed to make crocheted carrot gift bags. But, I sat down with some orange yarn and before I knew it, I’d whipped out a few of these. I think filled with a treat these would be a darling gift for anyone of any age.
Yarn
If you’ve been around Domestic Deadline before, you know I tend to crochet a lot. There is always yarn in my purse when I leave the house for any waiting time I might encounter. And, I can crochet while watching TV with my family. Sometimes the work in progress list gets a little large though.
And, I can’t get rid of any scraps of yarn, even when it’s a small ball. But, I always find a use for my scraps.
I should also mention, I have a lot of inherited craft supplies. Especially yarn. And some of that yarn is partial skeins. Like this orange yarn. I’m pretty sure it’s inherited because I don’t remember making anything in this shade of orange before.
But, it’s perfect for a carrot!
Crocheted Carrot
If you can crochet a single crochet (SC) and a double crochet (DC), then you can make this. It’s not really a pattern at this point, maybe I’ll write it up with more details eventually. But, I’ll share with you the basics of what I did. And I use American crochet terms, by the way.
Magic circles still elude me in crocheting, so I started with chaining 4 and joining it into a ring.
Next, crocheted 5-6 SC into the ring. From here I continued to work in the round, not joining the rows, just spiraling upwards.
In the next row, I alternated between one SC per stitch and 2 SCs per stitch.
After that, continue to SC and every 4-5 stitches do 2 SCs per stitch. Until you get to the length you want your carrot to be.
Once I was pretty close, I did a few rows where I occasionally did a stitch together. This tapered the carrot back in a bit. When it looked good, I stopped.
Switching to green yarn, I did one row of green SC. DC in each stitch for the next row. The third green row is back to SC.
Now it’s time to make the leafy top. In every stitch do 3 DCs all the way around. The multiples of 3 in the previous stitch makes a ruffle which looks leafy. Tie off and weave in ends.
Remember the first green row of DC? Grab a ribbon, a length of the green yarn, or even chain a length of green yarn. Weave it through the DC row. Now the bag can easily be tied up!
Repeat if necessary to make as many crocheted carrot gift bags as you need for your Easter treats.
