One thing I really love about blogging is getting to “meet” new people. So, I may only meet many of them virtually, but it’s still fun to get to know people. Someday I’ll get to go to a blogging conference and meet some of these people face to face. In the meantime, I get to know other bloggers from groups and link-ups. One of my favorite groups is the Movie Monday Challenge. Last month I wasn’t able to finish my project and participate. But, this month our theme was musicals and I had to make sure I joined in! My Tasha is a huge musical nut. Movies and theater, she loves musicals. So, my selection for this month’s challenge was Mamma Mia. After watching the original with Tasha, I had to make her a crocheted flower headband.
Musicals
I must admit, my favorite movie musical is Grease. It’s probably my favorite movie of all time. I remember singing the songs and having no idea of what some of the lyrics meant!
Tasha has been in all the musicals at her middle school and already can’t wait to audition in high school.
Plus, we got to see Hamilton this summer! She’s still in heaven over that.
But, knowing the new Mamma Mia was coming out this summer, Tasha and I watched the original together. I had never actually seen it. Of course, I already knew all the songs, so it was fun to see.
She went to see the second one with her friends and didn’t bother to wait to see it with me!
That’s ok, I still was inspired by the first movie to make something for her.
Mamma Mia
Truth is, the most inspiring thing about the whole Mamma Mia movie is the setting… I really, REALLY want to go to a Greek island now!
But, we really loved how beautiful Sophie looked in her wedding dress.
Ironically, Sophie is what Tasha wanted to name her brother when he was born.
She was 4 and her favorite doll she had named Sophie.
We vetoed that one.
And Applesauce and MyLittlePonyCareBear (which is how she wanted it spelled too, all one word). Come to think of it, there was a lot of singing in My Little Pony and Care Bear movies…
Ok, back to Mamma Mia.
Tasha likes to wear headbands so I came up with a cute and simple crocheted headband for her.
Crocheted Flower Headband
If you know basic crochet stitches this is super easy and works up really quick. I used worsted weight yarn and an H hook.
Instructions:
- Chain 105, it doesn’t need to be exact, I probably got off a bit. You just want to start (and end) with a really long tail to tie the headband on.
- Count back five chains and slip stitch into that stitch. Creating a loop to crochet our first flower into.
- Working in the loop repeat this stitch pattern 6-7 times (single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, half double crochet). Each repeat is a “petal” around the headband. Depending on how loose or tight you crochet and the hook you use, 6-7 petals fit within the loop. End with a single crochet.
- Chain 10.
- Count back 5 stitches and slip stitch to create another loop.
- Repeat Step 3 and Step 4 until you have 10 flowers (probably 8 would work for a child size).
- Chain 100 and tie off your yarn.
That’s it! To wear it, simply tie in place.
It’s a pretty simple design, obviously not nearly as detailed as Sophie’s, but Tasha likes it. I think depending on the yarn used, it could change the look. With a thinner yarn, beads could even be added.
I may have to play around with other flowers and colors.
It just occurred to me Tasha is wearing overalls, much like Donna does in a lot of the movie!
Movie Monday Challenge
On the last (or fourth) Monday of each month, a group of bloggers participate in a #MovieMondayChallenge, hosted by C’mon Get Crafty! We decide on a topic, genre, or specific movie to use for inspiration and everyone gets free reign to create something wonderful!
This month’s challenge was. . . . Musicals! Everyone was allowed to choose their own favorite film so long as it was inspired by the challenge word.
Now let’s see what everyone else was inspired to create for this month’s #MovieMondayChallenge!! If you’d like to join our Facebook group, you can request an invite here.
