Ever since last month’s challenge where I made new colors out of my polymer clay scraps, I’ve been thinking of projects to do with the clay. I also have a huge amount of yarn in my stash and literally crochet every day! I have promised myself only to buy new yarn if I need it to FINISH a project. Otherwise, I can’t buy any new yarn, and there is some beautiful yarn out there. Basically, these two things led me to make DIY ergonomic crochet hooks.
Why Ergonomic?
My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was just 5 years old. Actually, I think she was trying to teach my older cousin and I watched and learned. By 8 I was crocheting anything I could! For Halloween one year I decided to be Raggedy Ann, just so I could crochet the wig!
Many years later, I still enjoy crocheting, it’s therapeutic for me. But, my hands started to hurt when I would crochet too long.
So, I started using hooks with ergonomic handles. This was a huge improvement. And, because my family complained when I wanted a light on during a movie so I could keep crocheting, I got myself a set of light-up hooks. These handles are even bigger, which I like even more.
But, part of what I love about crocheting, is I have all of my grandma’s hooks.
Well, not all of these were my grandma’s, but quite a few of them were. And I have even more than this!
DIY Ergonomic Crochet Hooks
When I start mixing all the scraps together to make new colors, I love how the colors make fun patterns on their own.
Since the crochet hooks are metal, I simply wrap the polymer clay around it. Then roll it to smooth the clay all around the hook. If I want the handle thicker, I just add another layer of clay.
Using small letter stamps (similar), I press the hook’s letter size into the clay.
Then bake the hooks for 25 minutes at the temperature on the packaging (I like Sculpey – with a coupon as of post time!). Different brands may have different instructions, I don’t really know for sure.
That’s it! Now I have ergonomic crochet hooks! After I tried these out, I decided I need to make all my old metal hooks ergonomic… and there are a ton of them… but, I won’t have to buy any supplies!
