Each month I look forward to the Pinterest Challenge. I’m so excited to be back into the swing of things and participating again. With fall knocking on the door, I decided this was a great excuse to make some more fall decor items for my home. This month I decided to embrace the buffalo check and the layered doormat look… With a custom pumpkin doormat!

Layered Look

Have you seen the layered doormat look? It’s all over Pinterest and Instagram. Since we enlarged our front porch a few years back, I have felt like doormats have looked so small. I knew it would be a great look on our porch. And while I wasn’t planning on embracing the buffalo check trend, I just kept coming back to it! Here are two of my favorites:

I now want a wood front door too!

Finding a large buffalo check doormat was easy. It was also easy to return the 3 non-buffalo check ones I bough before giving in to it! The hard part was finding the top doormat… I found ones I liked at prices I wasn’t willing to pay… and ones I didn’t like at prices I was willing to pay…

Time to make my own pumpkin doormat!

Pumpkin Doormat

Dollar Tree always has plain dark gray doormats. I cut a few up for my bat mats a few years ago. Sometimes I keep a few on hand for when really nasty weather is predicted! Very basic:

Around this time of year, they also have felt pumpkins…

For $2.00, I figured it was worth trying to make my own custom pumpkin doormat. Using painters tape, I taped all the edges of the felt pumpkin.

Using a knife, I cut along the edges of the pumpkin, leaving the tape in the negative space.

After pressing the tape down as firmly as possible, I started painting with chalk paint I already had on hand. Once the first coat had sunk in, I layered on more paint. And removed the tape!

My own custom pumpkin doormat in my favorite color!

Funny thing is, I think the little doormat would have been lost and not nearly as awesome looking without the buffalo check rug underneath it!

And, I might have decided to use a little more buffalo check to pull the whole look together.

Now, let’s see what everyone else has been up to making from their Pinterest inspirations.

  1. This is brilliant, I was looking at those dollar store placemats just yesterday. I really love the layered carpet look but in Canada there can be snow during fall and they would get so dirty or worse ruined. This less expensive idea is perfect for our climate, as I'd be willing to risk the DIY version. Adorable!

  5. That is brilliant that you made your own stencil and I just love how this turned out!... I honestly had no idea that the dollar store had plain doormats. I'll definitely be on the lookout for those. I used to have so much fun painting custom doormats for my grandparents as gifts. Pinned.
  6. Great post! It is amazing how updating your entryway can change the look of your house. I have seen the checkered doormat look, and wasn't sure how it was done. It looks very chic.
