I remember seeing on Pinterest ages ago pumpkins carved with things like the home’s address or the family’s name. If I pinned it, I can’t find it now. A few weeks ago, the girls and I found faux pumpkins each with a single letter carved in them. They were really cute and they wanted to get them. Available in both traditional pumpkin orange and ivory, we weren’t able to find all the letters in one color or the other. Mixing them together wasn’t a look I liked. So, we passed on them. But, I kept thinking of how I loved the idea of “FISH” on pumpkins. When teal became the fall color in my house, I was then glad I wasn’t able to get the letters, but it was time to make our own family name pumpkins.
Inspiration
I’d already painted several pumpkin and fall decorations teal and it all started with a Dollar Tree pumpkin. The look was much less jarring than orange and black, but I felt like it was still missing something.
The original letters I found at The Christmas Tree Shops. When I looked online, I found I was never going to be able to spell FISH since I was not offered. Grabbing a picture from their page didn’t work too well, but the link takes you to what’s left of the letters, in orange.
Not sure what else I wanted for the living room, but wanting something for the fall season, not just Halloween, I came across thanks spelled out on pumpkins.
Before I settled, I headed back to the Dollar Tree.
Before
Styrofoam “carvable” pumpkins for only a dollar each, got my mind rolling.
I’d already been painting fall decor teal with chalk paint, why not paint a few more things?
Tip, start with painting the bottom. It took 3 coats of chalk paint to get a nice even color.
Family Name
Once I had the pumpkins painted the way I wanted, I used a pencil to write the letter on each pumpkin. A stencil would also work.
I thought about carving the letters but ultimately decided to just paint them. Confession, I tried it and didn’t like it so I went to painting!
My living room fall decor finally feels almost complete! I’m still hoping to make some pillow covers! What’s really nice is they are lightweight and won’t break if dropped. This is good since as it starts to get colder, the wood burning stove will start to get used which means they will get moved.
