My fireplace makeover is perfect for an upcycle challenge. I always enjoy participating in challenge groups with other bloggers. Upcycling thrift store finds is something I always find fun, so joining a monthly group for this was right up my alley. Thrift stores haven’t opened up around me yet but I have been finding some fun things on Facebook market.

The Rules:

Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor

There is no monthly theme.

There is no budget to stick to.

Second-Hand Fireplace

Our basement can be cold in the winter. Wanting the kids to spend more time down there when they have friends over, instead of the living room, I wanted to make it a comfy place.

Yes, I know it is currently summer as I write this…

After a few months of patiently waiting for a good deal on an electric fireplace that was in my size range, I finally found it!

Style wise, it was perfect for my old house, but size and the $50 price tag were perfect.

Slightly shorter than my Ikea Rast dressers was my goal. Adjusting the height of the dressers is a lot easier than adjusting the fireplace.

My stash of crate wood came in hand with this project. Making a false front gives the whole electric fireplace a complete new look.

Fireplace Makeover

Creating a top to join the three pieces together and give the entertainment center a bit of a rustic look. Leaving a notch for the cords and an extra row of boards helps fill a gap we needed to leave between the wall and the entertainment center.

Oh, and I gave the dressers a coat of teal paint… made from mixing lots of leftover sample paints in shades of blue and green.

The top pulls it all together. Don’t mind the extra piece on top, I also made a new top for an old end table.

I forgot to take pictures of the next step, adding additional bases to the dressers. This served two purposes. First, to make room for the cable box and other electronics above the fireplace.

The second purpose was to keep the wood of the dressers from sitting directly on the floor. We had a water problem so the extra base is made from plastic wood. Hopefully we have resolved the water problem and the extra precaution will never be necessary.

All stained, assembled, and ready for the kids. The drawers are full of DVDs and X-Box games!
