The kitchen renovation is moving right along. I’m a little behind in sharing the process, but I’m hoping to catch up with the pictures this week! You can’t have a whole new kitchen without starting with demo. So, today I’ll be sharing #DemoDay or at least the first day of it!

Similar to the before post I shared, this is mostly pictures. No cropping or any major editing. Just white balancing because the lighting was often poor and I just took pictures whenever I could. And, of course, I add my blog info (all via PicMonkey).

Pre-Demo

Before we could take a sledgehammer to the kitchen, we had to remove everything. I spent some time thinking about if I wanted to clear a space in the kid’s area in the basement.

Ok, maybe I spent 5 minutes considering that. I really didn’t want to have to take everything from the kitchen down a flight of stairs. And then bring it all back up in a few weeks!

With the kids gone, IronFish and I can forgo enjoying the living room for a few weeks. Doesn’t my whitewashed brick wall make great decor for a storage room!?!?!

The wall between the kitchen and the dining room is coming down. So the dining room had to be emptied too. We squeezed the table and hutch into the living room also.

Good thing we have IronFish’s office to relax in (which isn’t really happening). We did his custom built-ins using the cabinets we will be using in the new kitchen. We also did a bank of cabinets with a countertop and a mini fridge. It’s acting as half of our make-shift kitchen.

As long as we have our coffee maker and microwave, we’ll be fine!

Honestly, I don’t think I’ve used the microwave over the past 2 years as much as since we started the kitchen project. We stocked up on frozen meals and snacks!

The other half of the dining room is piled into O-Man’s bedroom. It’s a good thing he’s at my parent’s house since there is no longer even a small path to his bed.

Dismantling

The girls went to my parent’s house a week before O-Man. He helped us dismantle the kitchen. O likes to use the drill, so we let him remove the cabinet doors.

As much as he likes using the tools we let him use, he liked throwing things into the dumpster more. I finished removing doors and he threw them into the dumpster as hard as he could!

See the pile of reusable grocery bags on the floor? We filled them as we emptied cabinets. Then carried them into the living room. Rock what you’ve got!

The island was literally rolled into the living room at the end. We kept setting things on it while we took things apart.

Then O-Man decided he needed to be the photographer…

#DemoDay

Some of the emptyings of the kitchen took place the week leading up to our actual demo day. But, most of it was the night before.

And, then I drove half way across Pennsylvania and let IronFish get started without me! Which means the only pictures I have of the first official demo day are from when I returned.

I got back in time to finish ripping the cabinets off the wall and help smash them with the sledgehammer.

I spent 8 hours in the car while IronFish spent 8 hours on demo.

But, I think he actually enjoyed it!

Yes, he used a garden shovel to scrape up the last layer of flooring. There was an interlocking floating floor over faux brick linoleum. And the snow shovel was used to scoop up the pieces and to fill the garbage can.

Which he then took outside to the dumpster.

Day 2 started with the light being removed and then the wall coming down!

But, that’s day two demo.

Which I hope to show you in the next day or so. We’ve been working about 15 to 18 hour days.

I’m exhausted as I type this, so I’m going to bed now!

Check back soon because it’s getting even more exciting, I promise.

  1. Hi Emily - thanks for stopping by to visit me at Vintage Mama's Cottage. We are also doing an update in our home, in my sewing room, and it is a HUGE project! Looks like your remodel is even more overwhelming than ours - but it will be great once you get it finished. I'll be watching for more updates in the coming weeks. Glad to connect with you through the #HomeMattersParty. Nina @ Vintage Mama's Cottage
