Ok, I’m getting in the mood for Christmas! I might even be persuaded to put out a few more Christmas things even though it isn’t after Thanksgiving yet. Truth be told, I’m probably putting out my new personalized Christmas doormat since I’d rather people see that on Thanksgiving than the Halloween one! I also have to admit I am almost completely done with my Christmas shopping. Really the only gifts I have left are the ones I have to make. A few photo wood transfer gifts might be on my list for some special people…

Photo Wood Transfer DIY
A good friend of mine is an amazing photographer. Lara has taught me a lot about my own camera when I finally bit the bullet and went to a DSLR about a year and a half ago. Not only does she take beautiful pictures, but has been turning them into gorgeous photo wood transfers also.
We recently started working on some personalized Christmas ornaments for the Domestic Deadline Market and Lara showed me how to make these beautiful gifts.
The first thing we did was select a photo and the wood we would be transferring it to. When people or words are used, it’s important to flip the image. We did flip this image, but it wouldn’t have mattered in this case.
The photo needs to be printed on a laser printer. Another reason we work well together, I have an awesome new printer, lol. If you don’t have a laser printer or a friend with one, any place that does copies can print your picture via laser printer for a few cents.
With our picture cut to fit the wood, we applied a layer of Mod Podge Photo Transfer over the picture.
With the picture completely covered, Lara then flipped the picture and placed it face down onto the prepared wood piece.
Then we just had to let it dry for 24 hours to do its transferring job.
When it was ready, using a damp sponge, the paper gets wet all over.
And Lara began rubbing off the paper. With most of the image visible, she set it aside to dry for a while before dampening the paper again to remove more paper.
Once all the paper is removed and the piece has dried completely, it can be lightly sanded to age and expose some of the wood below. The final step is a layer of spray sealer.
I love the way this lilypad turned out!
Other Ideas
The neat thing about photo wood transfers is how the gift can be personalized to anyone. And, almost any type of wood can be used. This is Lara’s niece:
On a pallet, she sanded the edges for a more aged look, which I love!
Sorry to only show you a part of that project… it’s a gift after all… we wouldn’t want the recipient to find out early!
We’ve been having fun using this process to make Christmas ornaments for some of our customers.
Pst… looking for a great gift? Follow Domestic Deadline on Facebook… we’re going to be offering a Black Friday-Cyber Monday special on these ornaments, personalized and ready to give in a handmade cloth gift bag!
