Social distancing is obviously going to be sticking around over the summer. Deciding to embrace it and have a little fun with it, I made a doormat using a Dollar Tree mat and my Cricut. Because, well, why not? This extra time at home has resulted in a lot of family time, but also more craft time. We’re having fun saying safer at home this summer. You can make your own doormat too. Plus, I’ll be linking up with other friends who are sharing more summer ideas!
Staying Safer at Home
Living in New Jersey, the cases of Covid-19 are still quite high. School and work has been done from home for about 4 months now. Things are slowly opening up, but we’ve fallen into our new normal… staying safer at home.
The privilege of being able to do this hasn’t escaped me.
Planning shopping trips and ordering things with a broader delivery time have resulted in more time to craft and work on projects at home.
Balancing O-Man’s virtual school requirements and convincing him to put real clothes on… well, that’s where a chunk of unexpected time always disappears…
Social Distancing Doormat
I have yet to use my time at home to really clean out my craft room. There have been a few attempts, but they usually result in me finding a project to work on.
Using my Cricut for more projects has been a goal of mine. When I realized I had purchased a few of the plain doormats from Dollar Tree back in the fall, I immediately knew what I could make.
Last fall I used one of these doormats and a cute felt pumpkin to create my own pumpkin doormat the coordinated with my front porch decor.
Having my Cricut Maker cut out the words as a stencil made this project happen a lot faster than if I had used letter stencils, or even done the writing by hand.
Using the design space, I typed out my phrase “like a good neighbor stay over there.” Then I played with fonts and adjusted the size so it would fill the doormat nicely.
Fuzzy texture is very hard to successfully use a self-adhesive stencil on. Dabbing the paint over the stencil and using a chop stick or the end of an art brush helps to push the stencil down and reduce paint bleeding as much.
Carefully dabbing the paint in a few layers helped me to get the coverage I was going for.
Still Being Neighborly This Summer
While we are staying home more and taking our precautions, we’re still being neighborly, even with my sarcastic doormat.
Wearing masks, talking from a distance and more. Our neighborhood has been playing window bingo, sharing seeds and plants, riding bikes or walking. Despite the extra distance, I’ve met tons of new neighbors, learned of new opportunities in my area.
Psst… If you’re looking for patterns to sew masks, check out my huge round-up of mask patterns.
School is about to end for us (yes, we go well into June, but we won’t start back again until after Labor Day). The kids and I are beginning to plan things we can do this summer.
My Social Distancing Doormat isn’t a traditional summer project, but this isn’t going to be a traditional summer!
