The last few weeks have been busy around here. But, I haven’t shared much on the blog, even though I’ve gotten lots of projects accomplished! My living room is quite the disaster right now since I have taken it over… My craft room is in such a state I can’t work in there! I might have to go “Clean House” style and empty the entire room onto my front lawn to sort it all out. Just one more reason why I enjoy participating in the Craft Room De-Stash Challenge each month. This month I decided to make-over a metal fish wall art piece I’ve had for a long time.

Before

With the last name Fish, you’d be correct to assume we have lots of fish things around our house. Might as well rock the name, right?

Many of the fish things we have were gifted to us. However, sometimes I find things myself. Like this piece.

Several years ago, and in our first house, this was the right colors. And, it was just a fun piece when your last name is Fish.

While I still thought it was fitting for us, it no longer goes well with our house. Instead of finding something new, I decided to just paint it. Admittedly, because I hadn’t found anything else to put in the space. After having the fish hanging there for so long, leaving it empty didn’t work for me.

Paint

I always have some chalk paint in my craft supplies. Particularly Waverly Chalk Paint in Agave, White, and Elephant.

Those three colors work in all the common areas of my home. I also have smaller jars of a few other colors such as cashew and crystal. I started with the crystal and put one coat on the front and the back of the piece.

See, lots of projects taking over my living room!

With a coat all over, I focused on the front side. I wanted the backside lightened up, so if seen at an angle, it wouldn’t look so dark.

On a paper plate, I poured a some of the Agave and half as much of light blue, crystal, and cashew. Using a makeup sponge, I picked up a bit of each color and began to dab. By dabbing all the paint colors, they blend nicely. Occasionally, I would use more of one of the lighter colors to achieve the look I wanted.

Decorative Wall Art Make-Over

I love the new look! Now I feel like the fish wall art actually goes with the rest of the space.

Hung above the doorway from the dining room into the living room, it’s a fun pop of color.

Ironically, while looking for something else yesterday, this popped up in an ad. Guess I’m not the only one who thought fish in aqua blues was good decorating!

Now, let’s see what’s going on in the challenge…

  1. This is a fun piece of wall art and it looks great with the makeover. I love using Waverly Chalk Paint, too. Great tips about blending the colors. Pinning.
  2. Emily, I love the fresh touch you gave your little school of fish! I am not sure if it is helping, but my craft room is a mess, too. I had a little trouble putting a wedding gift together two weeks ago and while creating the gift I went through my craft room like a mad woman. Ripping out everything I thought could save the drama my craft turned into, lol. I am happy to say that in the end it worked out...45 minutes before the wedding. We were 5 minutes late :-/
    1. That's hysterical! My problem is when I start working on the space, other things come up and my family dumps anything they don't know what to do with or that I need to handle in there... and then it's lost, lol
  3. It's always fun updating decor pieces especially if they have sentimental value! And you did a fabulous job in transforming this wall hanging! I love the colors and quite appropriate for fishes!
  4. Your fish look great! I love the color combination you chose. Thank you for the tip about blending with a make up sponge. I never would have thought of using one, even though there's always a bag of them in my bathroom cabinet! ;-) Now I want to paint something! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
